Coming from the small town of Jonesville, VA, Kelley Nelson’s passion for music began in her early childhood. She made frequent visits to the Carter Family Fold in Hilton’s, VA, where she was exposed to the foot-stompin’ rhythms of Bluegrass music. She was introduced to the legendary sounds of Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, Ralph Stanley, Jimmy Martin, and countless others by her grandfather at a very young age. Kelley was also deeply influenced by the traditional Country music of the ‘70s and ‘80s, and the Gospel hymns that she sang in her church choir while growing up.
In the Fall of 2006, Kelley began pursuing her dream of performing professionally. Following the 2008 release of a well-received EP, Kelley’s first full-length album “Yesterday’s Blues” was debuted in September 2010. This album includes 3 songs penned by Kelley, and 4 originals by other accomplished songwriters. Her modern take on this sacred style of music has a way of appealing to a broad audience.
Along with performing at Bluegrass venues and Festivals, Kelley has a passion for Gospel music and a desire to share her testimony through song. She is currently making plans to record her first Gospel project in the coming months, which is anticipated to be released in the Spring of 2012. This album will include some very special guest musicians and singers, to be announced at a later date. Kelley states, “I am so excited to begin recording my first Gospel album! My heart’s desire is to share the music in my soul with as many people possible, and to have the opportunity to touch others with the gift God has placed in me. It is such an amazing and humbling experience!”
Along with performing her own songs, Kelley aspires to have her material recorded by other artists. A recent co-writing session with songwriter Ray Edwards yielded a tune entitled “Where My Darlin’ Waits for Me”, which will be included on his upcoming album with lead vocals by the super-talented Don Rigsby!
